Some updates of the poster. The character is painted and now it’s the background, the product and bugs.

My poster is heavily inspired by vintage poster for food. Where the kid looks extremely happy and exited to eat the product. Here I went for the same feeling but with the twist in the animation, that is the forced smile at the end.

Logo research. I went for a design closer to number 2. Even tho I think number 1 has some potential for a fun animation.

After counselling with the teachers and seeing the comments on my blog I may want to change my introduction.

In this alternative storyboard I’ve changed the order in which things happens. Its starting already in the kitchen. the kid sit down removes the gas mask. indicating that he need it to go out. then he watches the TV. This will be my way of establishing the world. the news guy can say something similar to “450s day following the nuclear annihilation, food never been so difficult to find. But thanks to Yumeat you can get your daily protein and vitamin dose!” then it advertise it saying how good it is.

The TV narrator can be the main narrator of the story. Also can interact with the kid. As if the TV could actually hear and see him. Sounds a bit scary but It’s a trope i’ve seen quite a lot it kids TVC

I want my animation to be inspired by the 50s or 60s. with colored furniture. But I will need to keep in mind that this is also the future. What I want to achieve is the future seen from a 60s perspective.

The clothes where a bit tricky. My story happens in a period of time that is both futuristic and also from a 70s 80s perspective. (style of animation, music, background) As I want to have this vintage vibe to it.

For the body types I experimented a bit, but most of the chubbier design where not fitting with my theme. Since this character lives in a world where the main source of food are bugs I wanted to make him a bit thin.
Plus I combined number 1 and 5 for its cartoony design, making it something more balanced but fun.

Here are some character design research. They are really rough and I’m planning on doing color research once i’m fixed on the design.

Who am I? What am I?

Greetings, call me Abel. I am an independent artist. From the baguette land. I am quite curious and cannot only choose one medium. So you may see me doing traditional, digital art, puppets, costumes, masks animation film and even taxidermy if I feel like it.

This blog is dedicated to one project. Which is a TV commercial of an invented product.

This project will be a great opportunity for me to create something that will fit in my portfolio. I really want to make something that represent my art style and my personality. I love insects and bugs and always wanted to make an animation based on them, but also make something kind of out of place. A cute commercial for kids that include food, everything will be cute and joyful, except the product itself that is bug meat.

I always loved to mix the cute and the disturbing. It’s a balance that is hard to get, because you don’t want it to be too in your face but you also want to trigger something in the viewer. The emotion I want to convey is best explained by “Nervous laugh” You are laughing because you may find it funny, but you are also disturbed and disgusted. That is my goal for this TVC project.

Inspiration

My inspirations focus on old looking cartoon. Such as jack stauber’s animation. That have both a nostalgic feeling with the VHS look and sound, but also childish style and themes.

For the visual style I want something that is inspired by early cartoons, something fun and very american. Also by using a lot of warm colors no white or black, the white will be replaced by light yellows or blues, and the black as dark red or blue. It will give a more dated look and will not seem as new and fresh as it is.

My concept is a futuristic approach on future food. The population will over grow and sources of food will be smaller and smaller. Over fishing and similar issues will be fatal to the human race. The solution? Eat bugs while the world is slowly being rebuilt!

I may have thought of different background.

☀ nuclear war made most food infected. Some insect survived like cockroaches.

☀ Vegan war! Big vegan army set all of the industry animals free, unfortunately they all died from illness in the wild. No more protein sources made the insect the best choice of survival.

☀ Over population of humans made eating meat very bad for the environment. while people are trying to fix what they have done to planet earth people are eating bugs.

I want this to be canned food. With a design inspired by products such as Campbells soups.

The YUMEAT product tries to cheer people up and make it seem like bugs are the best food ever! They are trying to target children especially, that’s why it would be animated.

Larva is the main flavor, because it’s easy to find fat and rich.

But there is other flavors! Such as locust, cockroach centipede…
